What is a Root Canal?

Last updated 3 months ago

Dental decay can affect not only your tooth’s enamel but also its root. When a cavity affects the tooth’s nerve and root, your dentist may recommend root canal surgery to repair the damage or infection. While the mere mention of a root canal may make some nervous, in reality, the procedure is no more uncomfortable than a routine filling. Talk to your dentist about when a root canal might be necessary and how the procedure is performed.

  • The Root Canal: The root canal is the cavity in the tooth that houses its nerve and pulp. Lying within the center of a tooth, the root canal is sometimes referred to as the pulp chamber. Root canal surgery can be necessary to repair significant decay to the tooth, pulp and root. As decay progresses and infection worsens, the risk of tooth loss increases, a risk that can be mitigated by a root canal procedure.
  • Function of the Root Canal: When dental decay affects the tooth’s nerve or pulp, the risk of infection increases and can lead to an abscess. A root canal removes the damaged pulp, infected tissue and bacteria to clean the tooth before sealing the canals to prevent future infection. To restore the appearance and function of the treated tooth, your dentist may place a crown or cap over the tooth.
  • Do I Need a Root Canal? In general, patients with severe toothache, heightened sensitivity to extreme temperatures, or tender gums may exhibit the symptoms of tooth decay and root canal damage. Your dentist will be able to determine whether or not your condition requires a root canal.
